Biografía
Born in San Salvador in 1984, Rodolfo Oviedo Vega is a painter, trained architect, and cultural actor. Based in Paris since 2003, he has built one of the most internationally exhibited practices of his generation: his work has been the subject of solo exhibitions in more than twenty-six countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and is held in public and private collections including the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Museum of Art of El Salvador (MARTE), Museo Forma in San Salvador, the Casa de los Artistas in Tehran, the Ministry of Defense of Spain, the Palacio Gómez in Havana (a property of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cuba), the Lang Lang Foundation in London, as well as the collections of Prince Albert II of Monaco and Prince Carlo di Borbone-Due Sicilie.
Travel constitutes, for Oviedo Vega, a working method in its own right. He has crossed the entire Latin American continent by motorcycle, from Mexico to Chile, passing through Panama and the San Blas archipelago, where he built a lasting collaboration with indigenous communities, notably during his years directing the Centro Cultural Internacional. He has also lived in India, between Kerala and the Himalaya, a region he has crossed several times by motorcycle and which remains for him a place of retreat and renewal. He has spent extended periods in Europe, exhibiting notably in Paris, Madrid, Tallinn, Dublin, Monaco and Milan. His connection to San Blas continued in 2023, when he organized the filming of a documentary for the Netflix series Tales by Light on the archipelago, and coordinated part of the stopovers of the ship Plastic Odyssey between Colombia and Panama.
His commitment to culture extends beyond his own practice. He founded the artist residency Jour et Nuit Culture in Paris in 2010, supported by the City of Paris, which has hosted more than eight hundred creators, and has served as its president since around 2015. He also directed the Centro Cultural Internacional in Panama from 2018 to 2022, and co-founded the ACA Association for the promotion of Central American culture in 2015.
Recognized by both French and Salvadoran diplomacy, he was decorated by the French Senate in 2016 for his artistic and cultural contribution to strengthening ties between France and Latin America. This relationship with France has durably shaped his career and his international collaborations.
His pictorial work stands at the intersection of abstraction, the sacred and the political, questioning symbols of resistance and domination. His current research focuses more specifically on the links between power, violence and sacredness, opening a space of reflection where history and memory engage with the challenges of the present.
